What is a HSTP?

Home Sewerage Treatment Plant/System (HSTP) is a single property treatment tank that is located underground in your very own backyard. Your HSTP is used to break down & discard the waste water from your toilets, showers/baths, washing machine, dishwasher, sinks, etc. This treated water is then irrigated onto dedicated grassed areas, this water is not suitable for human or animal consumption / contact.

How often do I need to service my HSTP?

HSTPs are required to be service every 3 months to stay compliant with the Western Downs Regional Council. Failure to stay compliant can result in fines issues by the WDRC. Standard services are quick & don't require you to be home to be completed. See "SPBM automatic servicing schedule" for more information.

Who can service my HSTP?

Only registered & licenced wastewater service providers can service a HSTP by Qld state law. Our team at SPBM have been licensed & proficient in HSTP installation, serving, maintenance & repairs for over 15 years.

How much does a HSTP service cost?

Our HSTP services are $125 per service, excluding any repairs if required. This includes the equipment and chemicals needed to carry out the service, as well as submission of forms to WDRC. If repairs are needed our team will notify you while we are on site.

Regular servicing & maintenance

Set up a SPBM automatic serving & maintenance schedule to always stay compliant!

Neglect servicing & maintenance

Keeping a current & up-to-date service & maintenance routine is paramount for having a well functioning sewerage system.

Divert unnecessary water

Divert unnecessary sources of water, like roof drains away from the wastewater treatment system. Excessive amounts of water can upset the system, reducing its effectiveness & can cause a build up of sludge / blockages.

No Foreign Objects & Materials

Do not flush disposable nappies, wipes, ta flushable wipes, tampons, sanitary napkins, condoms, plastics, paint, thinners, contents of a portable chemical toilet, cotton buds, kitchen towels, or any other foreign matter that is not natural human waste. Your HSTP cannot break these items down thus causing blockages.

Act on blockages & pollution

Call SPBM as soon as you encounter a problem & act immediately if there is any sign of blockage or pollution.

No Food Scraps

Disposing of Food scraps into your system or the use of a garbage grinder/disposal can increase the biological load on the system & could overload your HSTP. Scrape plates of all foodstuff before washing up.

Pump out

Call SPBM & book a pump out if your sludge levels are near or above 90%.

Limit Fats, Oils & Grease

Excessive amounts of fats, oils or grease may cause problems within the biological treatment process. Fats have a calorific value of over 57,000 times that of normal sewage.

Natural waste only

Your HSTP is designed to break down your natural bodily waste only. Any artificial items cannot be broken down & can result in blockages.

No harsh chemicals

The use of harsh cleaners, disinfectants or poisons can be harmful to your system's ecology. If you need to use these, use them sparingly, as they could kill the bacteria that help to break down the waste. Preferably, use biodegradable & eco-friendly products.

Clear access

Keep the access hatch to your HSTP clear & unobstructed for easy access.

No parking zone

No vehicles should drive or park over any part of the system. The weight can crack or damage your system.

Gardening & Planting tips

Planting anything over or near the irrigation area except grass can cause roots to clog & damage the drain lines.
